Praise be to God,

May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet, His Kith and Kin

Mr. Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

First of all, I should like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for your untiring efforts to defend the just Palestinian cause, which is essential for the establishment of peace and security not only in the Middle East region, but in the entire world.

I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the Kingdom of Morocco’s unconditional and constant support for the historical and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly the right to establish their independent State on their liberated territories, with East Al Quds as its capital – a viable, sustainable State living side by side with Israel in peace and security and in accordance with the resolutions upholding international legitimacy.

Mr. Chairman,

As we commemorate this year’s International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People, we cannot but note the absence of any tangible progress in resolving the Palestinian issue, twenty-four years into the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

In fact, the situation is getting worse as a result of Israel’s continued, invariable policy of aggression towards the steadfast Palestinian people, in blatant violation of international law and of the provisions of international humanitarian law. Israel’s aim is to undermine international efforts to revive the peace process and put the final nail in the coffin of the two-State solution advocated by the international community to achieve just, comprehensive and sustainable peace in the region.

The Israeli government has pressed ahead with its settlement and Judaization policy, with the expropriation of land and property and with harsher measures to hamper the movement of Palestinians inside their territory, in addition to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Furthermore, Israel has been violating the sanctity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and allowing radical Jewish groups to attack the faithful inside Al Haram al-Sharif, under the protection of the Israeli forces. These violations have been compounded by the terrorist crimes perpetrated by Israeli extremists against Palestinian citizens. Such acts sometimes amount to crimes against humanity.

Given Israel’s persistent hostility towards Palestinians and its continuing defiance of the international community, the Kingdom of Morocco condemns those violations and calls upon the international community and the influential powers to shoulder their responsibility in full and compel Israel to put an end to its policy of aggression and its illegal plans in the occupied Palestinian territories and to abide by the provisions of international humanitarian law and international legality.

Convinced that negotiations are the only way to achieve a just, lasting peace in the Middle East region, I call on the international community to revive the peace process through sincere, serious negotiations, with a clear timetable and on the basis of the principles of international law and related UN resolutions.

Morocco is ready to be actively engaged in any initiative aimed at moving forward with the peace process in order to achieve a settlement that would make peace and stability prevail in the region.

Mr. Chairman,

The disdain for the symbolism of Jerusalem and for the place it has in Muslims’ hearts, coupled with the continued attempts to Judaize the city or take control of it, will inevitably have serious consequences.

As Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Al Quds Committee, I have been calling for the protection of East Jerusalem against Israeli schemes aimed at changing its legal and demographic character and obliterating its cultural identity as well as its religious and cultural landmarks.

Consistent with our unwavering solidarity with our Palestinian brothers, I shall spare no effort to ensure that the Beit Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency continues to carry out concrete action on the ground in support of the steadfast struggle the inhabitants of Al-Quds are engaged in. The aim is to enable them to lead a dignified life on their land and to safeguard Islamic sites there as well as the city’s cultural and humanitarian heritage so that Al-Quds may remain a symbol of inter-faith, intercultural tolerance and coexistence.

Mr. Chairman,

The situation in the occupied territories requires a swift response to the urgent, pressing needs of the Palestinian people by, for example, supplying the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) with the financial resources it needs to enable it to continue providing basic services to the Palestinians, especially in the areas of schooling, health and housing.

The duty of solidarity with the Palestinian people requires us to support the National Authority’s efforts to tackle the adverse repercussions of the Israeli occupation on social and economic development in the occupied territories and East Jerusalem. According to World Bank estimates, the occupation costs the National Authority more than US$3 billion a year.

Furthermore, we should provide all forms of assistance to the National Authority for the implementation of its development plan for the period 2014-2016. This plan makes the Palestinian citizens its foremost concern and seeks to promote good governance at the local and national levels.

I should like to reiterate my full support for the Palestinian National Authority, under the leadership of my brother His Excellency President Mahmoud Abbas. I call on all our Palestinian brothers to work hand in hand so as to consolidate national unity and close Palestinian ranks, since this is the key to defending their legitimate rights.

I also call upon you to press ahead with your commendable efforts to uphold the rights of the steadfast Palestinian people and to sensitize the international community about the justness of their cause.

I pray that Almighty God grant you every success.

Thank you.

Wassalamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh.
